The weeks had slipped by more quickly than either of them had expected.

William had been busy with work and family commitments, while Colleen had been preparing for the move from the cottage she’d called home for nearly half a century. Their regular cups of tea and easy conversations had paused, though neither had forgotten the other.

One warm January afternoon, William found himself driving past the property. On impulse, he turned into the driveway.

The front gate stood open.

“Colleen?” he called.

“In the garden!” came her cheerful reply.

He walked around the side of the house and stopped for a moment.

Colleen was kneeling among the flower beds, wearing a light summer dress that moved gently in the breeze. Her wide-brimmed hat rested on a nearby chair, and she had kicked off her sandals, preferring to feel the cool grass beneath her bare feet as she worked.

She looked up and smiled.

“Well, look who’s remembered where I live.”

William laughed.

“I was beginning to think you’d forgotten me.”

“Impossible,” she replied. “Now come over here before these roses think they’re in charge.”

As he walked towards her, William noticed something he hadn’t before.

He’d always known he had an unusual appreciation for feet—a private preference he’d never really spoken about. It wasn’t something that defined him, merely one of those quirks people quietly carried through life.

Seeing Colleen standing comfortably barefoot in the garden caught him off guard.

Her feet were graceful despite the passing decades, evidence of a life well lived rather than hidden away. They suited her somehow—natural, confident and completely unselfconscious.

William was surprised by the reaction it stirred in him.

Where on earth did that come from? he wondered.

He quickly redirected his thoughts, reminding himself that he was there to visit a friend.

Colleen, oblivious to his momentary distraction, handed him a watering can.

“If you’re going to stand there admiring my roses,” she teased, “you may as well help keep them alive.”

“I wasn’t looking at the roses.”

“Oh?”

William caught himself.

“I… was admiring the garden.”

She gave him a knowing smile.

“The garden, is it?”

He smiled back, slightly embarrassed.

“The whole picture.”

Colleen laughed warmly.

“That’s a much safer answer.”

They spent the next hour tending plants, chatting about everything and nothing.

As they worked side by side, William realised it wasn’t simply what he’d noticed that afternoon that stayed with him. It was how comfortable Colleen was in her own skin. At eighty-three, she had no interest in pretending to be younger or different. She laughed easily, moved at her own pace, and seemed entirely at peace with herself.

He found that confidence unexpectedly attractive.

When they finally sat beneath the shade of the old oak tree with glasses of homemade lemonade, Colleen stretched her legs out across the grass.

“You know,” she said with a grin, “I probably should have put my sandals back on before you arrived.”

William smiled.

“I think the garden approves of the barefoot approach.”

“So do I,” she replied. “At my age, comfort wins every time.”

Their eyes met for a brief moment before they both looked away with amused smiles.

It wasn’t romance.

Not yet.

But somewhere beneath the easy conversation and playful teasing, each had begun to realise that their friendship had quietly become one of the brightest parts of their week.
